Jardin Colombia: Ultimate Travel Guide to This Amazing Town

Jardin Colombia

In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know to make the most of your visit to Jardin, including how many days to stay, transportation options, must-do activities, phone numbers to local guides, top restaurants, and the best places to stay. Prepare to be enchanted by this picturesque town and discover why Jardin Colombia is a hidden gem in in the back door of Medellín.

Jardin’s greatest weakness is also its greatest strength: It’s distance to Medellin

Nestled in the heart of the Andes, Jardin Colombia, is approximately 3 hours away from Medellín. And although it seems to be a disadvantage I actually believe it is its greatest strength: You get a fraction of the tourists that you’ll see in Guatapé, plus you’ll still see the authentic life of a Pueblo (town).

Jardin is a charming pueblo that stands as a testament to Colombia’s rich cultural and historical heritage. Recognized as one of Colombia’s heritage towns, Jardin is celebrated for its colorful architecture, vibrant coffee-growing culture, and stunning natural beauty. Its streets preserve the typical architecture of the Paisa colonization (To learn more about the Paisa Culture, check out our Walking Tour in Medellín) offering a stark contrast to the modernity of Medellín, which lacks much of this colonial charm.

How many days to spend in Jardin Colombia?

Short answer; at least 2 nights ideally not on a weekend, you’ll regret staying just 1 night. Jardin is not only a visual delight but also a place where the kindness of its inhabitants and its pleasant climate create an inviting atmosphere for visitors to stay and enjoy the present moment. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a taste of local cuisine, Jardin offers something for everyone.

But I only have one day? No worries, this is the hack: First of all, you have to be willing to wake up very early,  second, you’ll definitely need a private driver and/or a tour guide who knows how to maximize your short stay in Jardin.

If that’s your only option, I highly recommend you contact Andrés Múnera. He has been in the industry for more than a decade, speaks perfect English, has access to great places in Jardin, specializes in short trips there, and, unlike many others, he is a licensed tour guide (we actually got our license together many years ago).

How to get to Jardin Colombia?

Getting to Jardin Colombia, although it takes time is relatively easy from Medellin though there are few transportation options, basically the standard 22-seat buses or slightly smaller vans. If you want private and more comfortable transport, talk to Andres, the contact I shared above.

The most common way to reach Jardin from Medellín is by bus, with services departing regularly from the Terminal del Sur:

  • At ticket booth #2 you can get your ticket with Transportes Suroeste, or you can contact this number to book your ticket and they can also help with accommodation and other.
  • Rapido Ochoa operates several times a day. You can buy your bus ticket here.
  • Renting a car is an option, but I wouldn’t recommend if it’s the first time driving in Colombia; The winding two-lane roads, potholes, amount of motorcycles, and in general the Colombian driving culture, can make the experience a bit stressful.

The vibrant town square, Parque Principal, is the heart of Jardin. Here, you can relax with a cup of coffee, admire the colorful colonial buildings, and watch the world go by. The square is surrounded by cafes, shops, and the stunning Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, a must-visit landmark.

Visit La Garrucha:

One of the typical experiences in Jardin is taking a ride on La Garrucha, a traditional cable car that offers breathtaking views of the town and surrounding mountains. You can reach La Garrucha by hiking El Sendero de la Herrera, a scenic trail that takes you through lush forests and vibrant coffee plantations. The hike is relatively easy, making it accessible for most visitors. Once you reach La Garrucha, enjoy the exhilarating ride as you glide over the beautiful landscape, getting a bird’s-eye view of Jardin.

Hike to La Cueva del Esplendor:

Jardin Antioquia

One of the most do activities in Jardin is hiking to La Cueva del Esplendor, a cave with a waterfall cascading through its roof. The hike can be challenging, taking about 3 to 4 hours round trip, but it is well worth the effort. You can combine it with a bit of horseback riding. The trail takes you through stunning countryside, with plenty of opportunities to see local flora and fauna. Once at the cave, the sight of the waterfall pouring through the ceiling is a truly awe-inspiring experience. I highly recommend

Birdwatching:

Jardin is a birdwatcher’s paradise, home to a variety of bird species, including the Andean cock-of-the-rock. Early morning or late afternoon birdwatching tours are available, offering the chance to see these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. The Reserva Natural Jardin de Rocas is a popular spot for birdwatching, where you can observe the vibrant plumage and unique behaviors of the local birdlife.

Coffee Tours:

Visit a local coffee farm to learn about the coffee-making process, from bean to cup. Many farms offer tours where you can sample fresh coffee and see the production process up close. These tours provide fascinating insights into Colombia’s coffee culture and the meticulous work that goes into producing some of the world’s finest coffee.
